CNA Programs and Certifications

A certified nursing assistant (CNA) is part of the healthcare system and are often found in a nursing facility. This is a foundational position in healthcare and many use this as the first step in their career. They take care of the basic needs and general wellbeing for patients. A CNA may take care of housekeeping items, as well helping patients maintain their quality of life. They help nurses, change the clothes of patients, take vitals, help exercise, and assist with hygiene.

While each state may have different requirements for CNA certification, there are some general criteria that apply to all those interested in becoming a CNA. Someone who wants to become a CNA must have a high school diploma or GED. Then one must complete a state approved CNA training, which is available at community colleges, hospitals, and The Red Cross. Then you must complete clinicals, which are done in person. You then must pass the CNA certification test and apply to be listed on the CNA registry for your state.

The CNA programs can be a quick process, but they do require commitment from you. You should always verify the requirements for CNA certification for your state or state in which you want to work to make sure you complete all the steps. Once you determine where you can take the CNA classes in your state, you can enroll in them, which may take anywhere from one to four months to finish. The classes you take include medical terminology, anatomy, pharmacology, and physiology. You will get a brief introduction to these areas so that you can communicate with doctors and nurses.

You will complete on site training, also known as clinicals before the end of the program. When you go through clinicals, you will be guided by medical professionals, such as doctors or nurses. This allows you to have experience with the kinds of jobs that you will complete when you are working as a CNA.

After you finish your study, you then have to take a licensing exam to get your CNA certification. You will not be able to work in the field without a CNA certification. This exam covers all the areas that you studied while in school. It is important that there is consistent care from a CNA regardless of the healthcare location. These exams prove that you have the necessary skills to become a CNA. Most exams have multiple choice questions and a special test for manual skills. In the manual skills section, you will perform specific skills such as bathing, taking vitals, or adjusting someone in bed. Most of the time, you can complete both sections of the exam on the same day. Once you pass the exam, you are put on the registry for your state and able to work as a CNA.
